Can I compress TIFF images?

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) format is designed to preserve image edit and RAW data (layers, tags, transparency...etc.). As a result, they are significantly larger than JPG images. However, it is still possible to compress them. TIFF compression is better done using a lossless compression method like LZW or ZIP (deflate). These two methods fully preserve image data while reducing the TIFF file size.

Here is a list of TIFF compression methods supported by our TIFF converter. If you are unsure, use the default (LZW) method.

  • LZW - Popular for grayscale or color images
  • ZIP - Often better compression than LZW but takes longer
  • JPEG - Best for drastic file size reduction. However, this is a lossy compression algorithm. Tip: You can choose a 'Quality' level of 92 to generate TIFF images with the same perceived quality.
  • No Compression - The fastest method (no compression applied)
  • CCITT Group 4 - Best for black and white (bitonal images) text images.

When to use a lossy compression when converting to TIFF?

A lossy compression method (like JPEG) is suitable if your goal is to reduce output file size (some image information is lost).

Can I convert a transparent image to TIFF?

Yes. TIFF format also supports transparency. To preserve transparency (on by default), open "Advanced Settings" and choose the "Keep Transparency" option.

The bitmap and raster structure of TIFFs provide this file format with the flexibility to function as a container for JPEGs, image files with lossless compression, images with layers, or as pages.
