Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM) is an international standard for storing vector graphics, raster images, and text in a single device-independent file. Standardised as ISO/IEC 8632, CGM was designed so that technical drawings would look identical on any system, and it remains heavily used in aerospace, defence, and engineering documentation — the S1000D and ATA specifications for technical manuals both rely on it.

 

How to open a CGM file?

CGM is not supported by everyday image viewers. On Windows, IrfanView and XnView MP display many CGM files.

 

For full fidelity, professional tools such as CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator, and dedicated CGM viewers from technical publishing vendors do a better job with complex engineering drawings. LibreOffice Draw imports simpler CGM files. Converting to PDF or SVG is usually the easiest way to share a drawing with colleagues.

Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is a resolution-independent, open-standard file format. It is based on Extensible Markup Language (XML), uses vector graphics, and supports limited animation. The main benefit of using an SVG file is, as the name implies, its scalability. This file type can be resized without a loss in image quality. In addition, SVG is unique in that it is not an image format. Instead, it is an XML-based standard that provides information for creating two-dimensional vector images.

How to open an SVG file?

SVG files open readily in most web browsers, such as Firefox or Microsoft Edge. In addition, since SVG is an XML file, you can view the XML-associated text in any common text editor, such as Windows Notepad or Brackets for macOS.


It is possible to use Adobe programs for opening and editing SVG files. Just be sure to install the SVG Kit for Adobe Creative Suite plug-in first.
