OpenDocument Spreadsheet (ODS) is the spreadsheet format of the OpenDocument standard and the default in LibreOffice Calc and Apache OpenOffice Calc. An ODS is a ZIP package of XML describing the cells, formulas, charts, and formatting. Because the specification is published as ISO/IEC 26300 and belongs to no single company, ODS is favoured by governments and public bodies that need data to remain accessible in the long term.
LibreOffice Calc is the reference application for ODS, since it implements the standard in full.
You are not limited to it: Microsoft Excel has opened and saved ODS since 2009, Google Sheets imports it, and Apple Numbers can too. Some advanced formulas and chart types do not translate perfectly between suites, so check calculated totals after converting. Our ODS to XLSX tool handles conversion.

Excel 97-2003 Workbook (XLS) is the original binary spreadsheet format of Microsoft Excel, built on the Binary Interchange File Format and used as the default until Excel 2007. An XLS stores worksheets, formulas, charts, and formatting in one proprietary file, and it can also carry VBA macros. Its main limitations are a ceiling of 65,536 rows per sheet and a greater risk of file corruption than the newer XLSX.
Current versions of Excel still open XLS in Compatibility Mode and offer to upgrade the file to XLSX.
LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets, and Apple Numbers all read XLS. Because XLS files can contain macros, treat unexpected attachments with caution. Converting your archive keeps it safe and compact — our XLS to XLSX and XLS to PDF tools handle the job.
