7z is an open archive format that usually achieves noticeably higher compression than ZIP or RAR, thanks to the LZMA and LZMA2 algorithms. It supports AES-256 encryption of both file contents and file names, handles archives up to 16 exabytes, and can split output into volumes. The specification is published openly, with no licensing restrictions on implementing it.
7z archives are created and read by 7-Zip, which remains the reference application for the format. Once it is present, a 7z archive opens with a double-click.
On macOS, The Unarchiver or Keka handle 7z, and on Linux the p7zip package provides the same functionality from the command line. WinRAR and PeaZip can also extract 7z. Because the strongest compression settings are slow and memory-hungry, very large 7z archives take a while to unpack. You can also convert the file with our 7Z to ZIP tool.

Roshal Archive (RAR) is a proprietary archive format that generally compresses better than ZIP. Its distinctive features are strong AES encryption, built-in recovery records that can repair a partially corrupted archive, and multi-volume splitting, which breaks one large archive into numbered parts such as .part1.rar and .part2.rar. Creating RAR files requires licensed software, but the extraction algorithm is openly documented, so many tools can unpack them.
Neither Windows nor macOS opens RAR out of the box, so you will need a tool. WinRAR is the official program from the format’s creator and offers a long trial period.
Other tools extract RAR perfectly well: 7-Zip and PeaZip on Windows, The Unarchiver on macOS, and the unrar package on Linux. When an archive is split into several parts, place every part in the same folder and open the first one — the tool will pull in the rest automatically.
