DjVu (DJV) is a document and image format built for storing scanned pages — particularly text, line drawings, and photographs — at very small file sizes. It separates a scanned page into a text layer and a background layer and compresses each with a method suited to that content, so a colour page can be a fraction of the size of an equivalent PDF. DJV is simply the shortened, three-letter form of the DjVu extension, and the two are interchangeable.
How to open a DJV file?
DJV needs a dedicated reader. The best-known are WinDjView on Windows and DjVuLibre.
On macOS, MacDjView works well, and on Linux most distributions ship Evince or Okular with DjVu support built in.
