Word Macro-Enabled Document (DOCM) is a Microsoft Word document that is allowed to contain VBA macros — small programs that automate tasks such as formatting, filling in fields, or generating reports. It is otherwise identical to DOCX: the same ZIP-based Open XML package, with an extra part holding the macro code. Microsoft created the separate extension deliberately, so that a file’s name reveals whether it can run code.

How to open a DOCM file?

Microsoft Word opens DOCM and shows a security warning before enabling macros. Only click Enable Content if you trust the sender — macro-enabled documents are a common malware vector.

LibreOffice Writer opens DOCM files and displays the text normally, although VBA macros may not run correctly. To read a document safely without any macro risk, save or convert it to PDF, or re-save it as plain DOCX, which strips the code entirely. You can also convert the file with our DOCM to PDF tool.

OpenDocument Text (ODT) is the word-processing format of the OpenDocument standard, the default in LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice. An ODT is a ZIP package containing XML for the text and styles plus any embedded images. Because the specification is published as ISO/IEC 26300 and controlled by no single vendor, ODT is widely used by governments and public institutions that need documents to stay readable for decades.

How to open an ODT file?

LibreOffice Writer is the natural application for ODT, since it implements the standard in full.

You do not need it, though: Microsoft Word has opened and saved ODT since 2009, Google Docs imports it, and Apache OpenOffice Writer handles it natively. Complex layouts can shift a little when moving between suites, so convert the file with our ODT to PDF tool when exact formatting matters.
