An Excel file is a spreadsheet created in Microsoft Excel, saved today with the .xlsx extension. It organises data into rows and columns across one or more worksheets and stores far more than the numbers themselves: formulas, cell formatting, charts, pivot tables, conditional rules, and named ranges all live in the same file. Modern Excel workbooks use the open Office Open XML standard, which is why so many other programs can read them.

How to open an Excel file?

Microsoft Excel is the natural choice, and Excel for the web opens workbooks in a browser with a Microsoft account.

Without Excel, use Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, or Apple Numbers — all of them recalculate formulas. Advanced features such as pivot tables and macros may behave differently outside Excel. To circulate figures that recipients should read but not edit, convert the workbook with our Excel to PDF tool.

Comma-Separated Values (CSV) is a plain-text format for tabular data. Each line is a row, and commas separate the columns, with the first line usually holding the column headings. There is no formatting, no formulas, and no multiple sheets — just the data itself. That simplicity is the point: almost every spreadsheet program, database, and analytics tool in existence can import and export CSV, which makes it the default choice for moving data between systems.

How to open a CSV file?

Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, and LibreOffice Calc all open CSV files directly and lay them out as a proper table.

Watch out for two common problems: Excel may convert long numbers or codes into dates, and files that use semicolons or tabs instead of commas need the right delimiter chosen during import. Use the Data → From Text/CSV import wizard rather than double-clicking to control this. To see the raw contents, open the file in any text editor, or convert it with our CSV to XLSX tool.
