PowerPoint Open XML Template (POTX) is the modern template format for Microsoft PowerPoint, introduced alongside PPTX in 2007. Like PPTX it is a ZIP package of Office Open XML parts, and it holds slide masters, layouts, theme colours, fonts, and background designs. A POTX cannot contain macros — that is what distinguishes it from POTM — so it is the safer template format to distribute across a company.
How to open a POTX file?
Double-click the file and PowerPoint opens a new presentation built from the template. To edit the template itself, start PowerPoint and open the POTX via File → Open.
LibreOffice Impress opens POTX, and Google Slides can import one as the basis of a theme. Saving a POTX into PowerPoint’s Custom Office Templates folder makes it appear on the New screen next to Microsoft’s own designs. You can also convert the file with our POTX to PDF tool.
