FictionBook 2.0 (FB2) is an open e-book format based on XML, created in Russia and widely used across Eastern Europe. Its guiding idea is to describe a book’s structure — chapters, epigraphs, poems, citations, footnotes — rather than its appearance, leaving the reading software to handle presentation. The whole book, including cover art encoded inside the XML, lives in a single file, which makes FB2 easy to store, index, and convert.

Dedicated readers include FBReader on desktop and mobile, plus Cool Reader and AlReader on Android. Most e-ink devices do not support FB2 natively, so convert the file before transferring it — our FB2 to EPUB and FB2 to PDF tools handle that.

An EPUB is really a ZIP package of HTML, CSS, images, and fonts, which means the text reflows to fit whatever screen it is read on. Readers can change the font, size, and margins freely, and the same file works on phones, tablets, e-readers, and computers.

 

How to open an EPUB file?

On Apple devices, EPUB opens directly in Apple Books. On Windows and Android, Calibre is the standard choice and doubles as a library manager and converter.

 

Other good readers are Adobe Digital Editions, which handles DRM-protected library loans, plus Thorium Reader, Google Play Books, and Kobo. Amazon Kindle devices now accept EPUB through Send to Kindle, but for older Kindles convert the file first with our EPUB to MOBI tool.
