Sony RAW (ARW) is the raw file format produced by Sony Alpha cameras, from the entry-level bodies to the full-frame a7 and a1 series. Based on the TIFF/EP structure, an ARW holds the complete sensor readout together with the lens, ISO, and exposure metadata recorded at capture. Nothing is baked in, so white balance, highlight recovery, and colour can all be reworked later without degrading the image.
How to open a Sony RAW file?
Sony’s Imaging Edge Desktop renders ARW files exactly as the camera intended, including Sony’s Creative Look profiles.
Most photographers prefer Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw, while RawTherapee and darktable offer the same capability. Very new camera models may need a software update before their ARW files are recognised. To share an image quickly, use our ARW to JPG converter.
