Tape Archive (TAR) is a Unix format that joins many files and folders into one file while preserving their directory structure, permissions, ownership, and timestamps. Importantly, TAR does not compress anything — it only bundles. That is why TAR files are so often paired with a separate compressor, producing the familiar .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, and .tar.xz combinations. TAR remains the standard way to distribute source code and back up Linux systems.
On Linux and macOS, the built-in tar command does the job: run tar -xf archive.tar in a terminal, or simply double-click the file in the desktop file manager.
Windows 11 can extract TAR from File Explorer and from the command line. For older versions, use 7-Zip, WinRAR, or PeaZip. Since a plain TAR is uncompressed, it is the same size as its contents — compress it to .tar.gz before sending it anywhere. You can also convert the file with our TAR to ZIP tool.
