Excel Macro-Enabled Workbook (XLSM) is a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet permitted to contain VBA macros — code that automates calculations, builds reports, or drives custom buttons and forms. Structurally it is identical to XLSX, a ZIP package of Open XML parts, with one additional component holding the macro project. The distinct extension exists so you can tell at a glance that a workbook is able to run code.
How to open an XLSM file?
Microsoft Excel opens XLSM and displays a security bar asking whether to enable macros. Enable them only when you trust the source, since macro-enabled workbooks are a well-known malware vector.
LibreOffice Calc opens XLSM and shows the data, though VBA macros may not run identically. Google Sheets imports the spreadsheet but strips the macros entirely. OpenDocument Spreadsheet (ODS) is the spreadsheet format of the OpenDocument standard and the default in LibreOffice Calc and Apache OpenOffice Calc. An ODS is a ZIP package of XML describing the cells, formulas, charts, and formatting. Because the specification is published as ISO/IEC 26300 and belongs to no single company, ODS is favoured by governments and public bodies that need data to remain accessible in the long term.
How to open an ODS file?
LibreOffice Calc is the reference application for ODS, since it implements the standard in full.
You are not limited to it: Microsoft Excel has opened and saved ODS since 2009, Google Sheets imports it, and Apple Numbers can too.
