Excel Macro-Enabled Workbook (XLSM) is a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet permitted to contain VBA macros — code that automates calculations, builds reports, or drives custom buttons and forms. Structurally it is identical to XLSX, a ZIP package of Open XML parts, with one additional component holding the macro project. The distinct extension exists so you can tell at a glance that a workbook is able to run code.
How to open an XLSM file?
Microsoft Excel opens XLSM and displays a security bar asking whether to enable macros. Enable them only when you trust the source, since macro-enabled workbooks are a well-known malware vector.
LibreOffice Calc opens XLSM and shows the data, though VBA macros may not run identically. Google Sheets imports the spreadsheet but strips the macros entirely. Excel Open XML Workbook (XLSX) is the default spreadsheet format of Microsoft Excel since the 2007 release. An XLSX file is a ZIP package of Office Open XML parts describing worksheets, formulas, charts, and formatting. Compared with the old XLS format it is substantially smaller, supports over a million rows per sheet, and cannot contain macros — a deliberate safety measure.
How to open an XLSX file?
Microsoft Excel opens XLSX natively, and Excel for the web opens it in a browser with a Microsoft account.
Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, and Apple Numbers all preserve formulas and most formatting. Very complex workbooks with pivot tables or advanced charts are safest in Excel itself. To share data without letting recipients change it, convert the workbook with our XLSX to PDF tool.
