Gzip (GZ) is a compression format built on the DEFLATE algorithm and created as a free replacement for the patent-encumbered compress utility. A key point often missed is that gzip compresses a single file — it is not an archive format and cannot hold a folder on its own. That is why it is normally combined with TAR to produce .tar.gz. Gzip is also what web servers use to compress pages before sending them to your browser.
On Linux and macOS, run gunzip file.gz in a terminal, or double-click the file in your desktop environment to decompress it in place.
On Windows, use 7-Zip, WinRAR, or PeaZip — all of them recognise GZ. If the file is really a .tar.gz, you may have to extract it twice: once to unwrap the gzip layer and once more to unpack the TAR inside. You can also convert the file with our GZ to ZIP tool.

TGZ is a TAR archive that has been compressed with gzip, combining two steps into one file. TAR gathers the files and folders together and preserves their permissions and structure, then gzip compresses the resulting bundle. The .tgz extension is simply a shorter spelling of .tar.gz, kept from the days of three-character extensions, and the two are completely interchangeable.
On Linux and macOS, one command does everything: tar -xzf archive.tgz. Desktop file managers on both systems also unpack TGZ with a double-click.
On Windows, 7-Zip, WinRAR, and PeaZip all handle TGZ, though 7-Zip may need two passes — the first removes the gzip layer, the second opens the TAR. Windows 11 can also extract TGZ directly from File Explorer. You can also convert the file with our TGZ to ZIP tool.
