Hangul Word Processor Document (HWP) is the native format of Hangul, a word processor made by the South Korean company Hancom. Hangul handles the Korean writing system, vertical text, and Korean typographic conventions far better than Western software, which is why HWP became the standard document format in South Korean government, education, and business. An HWP file stores formatted text, tables, images, and layout much as a Word document does.
How to open an HWP file?
Hancom Office Hangul is the reference application. Hancom also publishes an HWP Viewer that opens and prints documents without the full editor.
Elsewhere, LibreOffice Writer imports many HWP files, and Google Docs can display some through Google Drive. Formatting frequently shifts outside Hancom’s own software, so for anything important ask the sender for a PDF or DOCX export.
