OpenDocument Spreadsheet (ODS) is the spreadsheet format of the OpenDocument standard and the default in LibreOffice Calc and Apache OpenOffice Calc. An ODS is a ZIP package of XML describing the cells, formulas, charts, and formatting. Because the specification is published as ISO/IEC 26300 and belongs to no single company, ODS is favoured by governments and public bodies that need data to remain accessible in the long term.

You are not limited to it: Microsoft Excel has opened and saved ODS since 2009, Google Sheets imports it, and Apple Numbers can too. It organises data into rows and columns across one or more worksheets and stores far more than the numbers themselves: formulas, cell formatting, charts, pivot tables, conditional rules, and named ranges all live in the same file. Modern Excel workbooks use the open Office Open XML standard, which is why so many other programs can read them.
How to open an Excel file?
Microsoft Excel is the natural choice, and Excel for the web opens workbooks in a browser with a Microsoft account.
Without Excel, use Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, or Apple Numbers — all of them recalculate formulas. Advanced features such as pivot tables and macros may behave differently outside Excel.
