Adobe Illustrator Artwork (AI) is the native file format of Adobe Illustrator, the industry-standard vector graphics editor. Because AI stores artwork as mathematical paths rather than pixels, a logo or illustration can be scaled from a business card to a billboard with no loss of sharpness. AI files also preserve layers, editable text, artboards, and colour profiles, which is why they are the standard deliverable for logo and branding work.
How to open an AI file?
Adobe Illustrator is the natural choice and gives full editing access to every layer and path. Adobe Photoshop can also open AI files, but it rasterises them, so the vectors are no longer editable.
Inkscape imports most AI files, and CorelDRAW and Affinity Designer read them as well. Many AI files are saved as PDF-compatible, so simply renaming a copy to .pdf will often let any PDF reader display it. To share the artwork as an image, use our AI to PNG or AI to JPG tool.
