TAR.GZ is the standard Unix and Linux way of packaging software and backups. It is produced in two stages: TAR first collects all the files and directories into a single stream, keeping permissions and timestamps intact, and gzip then compresses that stream. Because gzip works across the whole bundle rather than file by file, TAR.GZ typically compresses collections of small text files better than ZIP does.
On Linux and macOS, run tar -xzf archive.tar.gz in a terminal, or double-click the file to extract it through the graphical archive manager.
Windows 11 extracts TAR.GZ from File Explorer, and on earlier versions 7-Zip, WinRAR, or PeaZip will do it. With 7-Zip you often extract twice — once to unwrap the .gz and once for the .tar. The shorter .tgz extension refers to exactly the same kind of file. Our archive converter can repackage it into another archive format.

ZIP is the most widely used archive format in the world. It bundles any number of files and folders into a single container and compresses them, usually with the DEFLATE algorithm. Compression is lossless, so everything extracts exactly as it went in. Each file inside is compressed separately, which means a damaged archive can often still yield its undamaged members, and individual files can be read without unpacking the whole thing.
No extra software is needed on any modern system. On Windows, right-click the file and choose Extract All; on macOS, double-click it and Archive Utility unpacks it automatically.
For password-protected or very large archives, dedicated tools work better: 7-Zip on Windows, WinRAR and WinZip as long-standing alternatives, and The Unarchiver on macOS. On Linux, the unzip command handles it in one step.
