WPS is the word-processing document format of Microsoft Works, the inexpensive office suite Microsoft bundled with home PCs from the late 1980s until the product was discontinued in 2009. A WPS file holds formatted text, tables, and images in a proprietary binary structure similar to, but not compatible with, Microsoft Word’s DOC. The same extension is also used by Kingsoft WPS Office, an unrelated suite.

How to open a WPS file?

LibreOffice Writer is the most reliable option today and opens most Works documents without any add-ons.

Older versions of Microsoft Word could read WPS through a converter, but that support was removed in recent releases. WPS Office from Kingsoft is worth trying if LibreOffice struggles. Because Works has been discontinued for well over a decade, converting your files to DOCX or PDF is the sensible way to keep them readable. You can also convert the file with our WPS to PDF tool.

Word Open XML Document (DOCX) is the default format of Microsoft Word since the 2007 release and the most common word-processing format in the world. Despite appearances, a DOCX is not a single document but a ZIP package holding Office Open XML files, images, and styles. That structure makes DOCX smaller than the old DOC format, far more resistant to corruption, and readable by software that has never seen Word.

How to open a DOCX file?

Microsoft Word opens DOCX natively on Windows, macOS, the web, and mobile. Word for the web handles most documents in a browser.

LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs, and Apple Pages all read and edit DOCX, though very complex layouts can shift slightly. When the formatting must stay exactly as the author intended, convert the file with our DOCX to PDF tool before sharing it.
