WPS is the word-processing document format of Microsoft Works, the inexpensive office suite Microsoft bundled with home PCs from the late 1980s until the product was discontinued in 2009. A WPS file holds formatted text, tables, and images in a proprietary binary structure similar to, but not compatible with, Microsoft Word’s DOC. The same extension is also used by Kingsoft WPS Office, an unrelated suite.
How to open a WPS file?
LibreOffice Writer is the most reliable option today and opens most Works documents without any add-ons.
Older versions of Microsoft Word could read WPS through a converter, but that support was removed in recent releases. WPS Office from Kingsoft is worth trying if LibreOffice struggles. Word 97-2003 Document (DOC) is the original binary format of Microsoft Word, used as the default from the 1980s until Word 2007 replaced it with DOCX. A DOC file packs text, formatting, images, tables, and embedded objects into a single proprietary structure. Because that structure is binary rather than XML, DOC files are more prone to corruption, harder for other programs to interpret, and can carry macro-based malware.
How to open a DOC file?
Every current version of Microsoft Word still opens DOC files, usually in Compatibility Mode, and offers to convert them to the newer DOCX format.
