OpenDocument Drawing (ODD) is a graphics document from the OpenDocument family, the open standard used by LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice. The file is a ZIP package containing XML that describes shapes, lines, text boxes, and any embedded bitmaps, so the artwork stays editable and scales without losing quality. Note that the standard extension for OpenDocument drawings is .odg, and .odd files are usually the same kind of drawing document.

How to open an ODD file?

The natural application is LibreOffice Draw, which reads the whole OpenDocument family. Apache OpenOffice Draw works equally well.

If the file will not load, try renaming it to .odg first — that is the extension LibreOffice expects for a drawing. Other options include Inkscape, which imports OpenDocument drawings, and Google Drive, which can preview many OpenDocument files in the browser. To share the drawing with someone who has no office suite, convert it to PDF or PNG. You can also convert the file with our ODD to PDF tool.

Word 97-2003 Document (DOC) is the original binary format of Microsoft Word, used as the default from the 1980s until Word 2007 replaced it with DOCX. A DOC file packs text, formatting, images, tables, and embedded objects into a single proprietary structure. Because that structure is binary rather than XML, DOC files are more prone to corruption, harder for other programs to interpret, and can carry macro-based malware.

How to open a DOC file?

Every current version of Microsoft Word still opens DOC files, usually in Compatibility Mode, and offers to convert them to the newer DOCX format.

LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs, and Apple Pages all handle DOC well. Since support for this legacy format is gradually being reduced, converting your archive is sensible — our DOC to DOCX and DOC to PDF tools do it in one step.
