How to Convert CAF to AMR?

Core Audio Format (CAF) is Apple’s professional audio container, introduced with Mac OS X Tiger. Unlike WAV and AIFF, which are effectively capped at 4 GB, a CAF file has no practical size limit, so it can hold hours of high-resolution multichannel audio in one piece. CAF is a container rather than a codec: the audio inside may be uncompressed PCM, Apple Lossless, AAC, or several other encodings.

 

How to open a CAF file?

On macOS, CAF opens in QuickTime Player, the Music app, Logic Pro, and GarageBand without any extra software.

 

On Windows and Linux, use VLC media player or Audacity, and FFmpeg for batch conversion. Because CAF is largely an Apple-only format, converting it makes sharing far easier — try our CAF to MP3 or CAF to WAV tool.

Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) is a compressed audio file that is often used for speech coding. The AMR speech codec focuses on narrowband signals, which makes it ideal for voice recordings and radio. It is used regularly in Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS).

 

How to open an AMR file?

Since AMR files are often used on mobile phones, including for MMS messaging, most 3G mobile devices are able to open them. AMR also opens with VLC media player, QuickTime, RealPlayer, and Xine.

 

Other software, such as the free audio-editing software Audacity, can open AMR files. Download audacity easily at SourceForge.net. Because AMR files are heavily compressed and focused on narrowband signals, they are not suitable for music files.
