The 3rd Generation Audio (3GA) file format is the audio stream portion of a 3GPP multimedia container, and it is designed for 3G Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) mobile networks. Because 3GA files are heavily compressed and focused on narrowband signals, they are not suitable for music files.
By default, 3GA files open in VLC media player and QuickTime for Mac. 3GA files also open in the voice recorder applications of most mobile phones. Because it is common to use 3GA files for MMS messaging, most 3G mobile devices can open them.
Other programs that can open 3GA files include, Media Player Classic, RealPlayer, and MPlayer. If opening a 3GA file is problematic, then rename the file to include the extension “3GP” and try to open it again.

Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) is a compressed audio file that is often used for speech coding. The AMR speech codec focuses on narrowband signals, which makes it ideal for voice recordings and radio. It is used regularly in Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS).
Since AMR files are often used on mobile phones, including for MMS messaging, most 3G mobile devices are able to open them. AMR also opens with VLC media player, QuickTime, RealPlayer, and Xine.
Other software, such as the free audio-editing software Audacity, can open AMR files. Download audacity easily at SourceForge.net. Because AMR files are heavily compressed and focused on narrowband signals, they are not suitable for music files.
