Compressed SVG (SVGZ) is a Scalable Vector Graphics file compressed with gzip. SVG is written in plain XML text, which compresses extremely well — an SVGZ is often only a fifth of the size of the original. The artwork inside is unchanged: it is still resolution-independent vector data that stays crisp at any scale, supports transparency and animation, and can be styled with CSS.

How to open an SVGZ file?

All major web browsers display SVGZ directly when a web server sends it with the correct encoding header, and Inkscape opens and saves the format natively.

Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Designer, and LibreOffice Draw also read SVGZ. If a program refuses the file, rename it to .svg.gz, decompress it with 7-Zip, and open the plain SVG that comes out. Our SVG to PNG tool converts it to a standard image.

OpenDocument Drawing (ODD) is a graphics document from the OpenDocument family, the open standard used by LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice. The file is a ZIP package containing XML that describes shapes, lines, text boxes, and any embedded bitmaps, so the artwork stays editable and scales without losing quality. Note that the standard extension for OpenDocument drawings is .odg, and .odd files are usually the same kind of drawing document.

How to open an ODD file?

The natural application is LibreOffice Draw, which reads the whole OpenDocument family. Apache OpenOffice Draw works equally well.

If the file will not load, try renaming it to .odg first — that is the extension LibreOffice expects for a drawing. Other options include Inkscape, which imports OpenDocument drawings, and Google Drive, which can preview many OpenDocument files in the browser. To share the drawing with someone who has no office suite, convert it to PDF or PNG. You can also convert the file with our ODD to PDF tool.
