What is an AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) file?

AV1 Image File Format (AVIF) is a modern image format that stores still pictures and image sequences compressed with the AV1 video codec inside a HEIF container. AVIF typically produces files far smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, and it supports transparency, animation, wide colour gamut, and HDR. It is royalty-free, which is a key reason websites adopted it quickly.

How to open an AVIF file?

All current major web browsers — Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, and Opera — display AVIF images natively, so dragging the file into a browser tab is the quickest way to view it. Windows 11 shows AVIF in Photos, and macOS opens it in Preview.

For editing, use GIMP, XnView MP, or Affinity Photo. Older software and some email clients still cannot read AVIF, so convert the file first with our AVIF to JPG tool when you need maximum compatibility.

The considerable compression that JPG offers is the reason for its wide use. As such, the relatively small size of JPG files makes them excellent for transporting over the Internet and using on websites. How to open a JPG file?

Almost all image-viewer programs and applications recognize and can open JPG files. Simply double-clicking the JPG file will usually result in its opening in your default image viewer, image editor, or web browser. To select a specific application to open the file, utilize right-click, and select "Open with" to make your selection.
