Microsoft Digital Video Recording (DVR-MS) is the multimedia container file format that results when a Stream Buffer Engine (SBE) records television (TV) content. DVR-MS is proprietary to Microsoft, which designed it to store TV recordings captured by Microsoft products. In 2008 (with Windows 7), the Windows Recorded TV Show (WTV) format replaced DVR-MS.

How to open a DVR-MS file?

Microsoft Windows 7, 8, and 10 still support DVR-MS files. Therefore, a DVR-MS file opens with Windows Media Player. If an application requires DVR-MS, then Microsoft recommends using the following utility to convert WTV to DVR-MS: \Windows\ehome\WTVConverter.exe.

Other players that can open a DVR-MS file include VLC media player, Cyberlink PowerDirector, Cyberlink PowerDVD, and Cyberlink PowerProducer.

MPEG-1 Audio Layer III or MPEG-2 Audio Layer III (MP3) is a digital, audio-coding format used to compress a sound sequence into a very small file to enable digital storage and transmission. MP3 files are the most widely-used audio file for consumers. Due to small size and acceptable quality, MP3 files are accessible to a wide audience, as well as easy to store and share.

How to open an MP3 file?

Because MP3 files are so prevalent, most major audio playback programs support them. Simply clicking on the file will open it in iTunes or Windows Media Player, depending on your preferred platform. Users can also preview MP3 files.

Another program that can open MP3 files is VLC media player. Keep in mind that two other file types use the MP3 extension. They are Masterpoint green points data, which is obsolete; and TeslaCrypt 3.0 ransomware encrypted file, which is malware that demanded ransom in bitcoins, but is thankfully now deactivated and no longer a threat.
