MPEG Transport Stream (TS) is a container format designed for broadcasting and streaming rather than for storage on disk. It splits audio and video into small fixed-size packets and repeats the timing and format information throughout the stream, so a receiver can start playing partway through and recover cleanly from errors. That resilience is why TS underpins digital TV, Blu-ray discs, and HLS internet streaming.

 

How to open a TS file?

VLC media player is the standard answer — it plays TS files on every platform without additional codecs and can also join a series of TS segments together.

 

Other options include mpv, MPC-HC on Windows, and professional editors such as Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve. Because TS carries a lot of packet overhead and is awkward to edit, converting recordings with our TS to MP4 tool produces smaller, more portable files.

Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) is Apple’s lossless audio format, stored inside an M4A container. It compresses a recording to roughly half its original size while preserving every sample, so decoding returns audio identical to the source CD or WAV. ALAC is the natural choice for lossless libraries in the Apple ecosystem, and Apple released it as open-source in 2011, which broadened support well beyond its own devices.

 

How to open an ALAC file?

On Apple devices, ALAC plays directly in the Music app, iTunes, or QuickTime with no setup at all.

 

Elsewhere, VLC media player, foobar2000, and Android all read ALAC. Since ALAC files carry the .m4a extension, they look identical to lossy AAC files in a file listing — check the track properties to tell them apart. To free up space or play the music on limited hardware, convert it with our M4A to MP3 tool.
