Microsoft designed Windows Recorded TV Show (WTV) to store TV recordings captured by Microsoft products. WTV is a multimedia container that compresses video with MPEG-2 and MPEG-4, and audio with MPEG-1 Layer II or Dolby Digital AC-3. It supports metadata and digital rights management (DRM). In 2008, WTV replaced another Microsoft-proprietary format, DVR-MS.

How to open a WTV file?

It is important to know that Microsoft no longer supports WTV. Regardless, it is best to use Windows Media Player to open a WTV file. If a copyright protects the content, then it only plays on the Windows PC that was used to record it. If a copyright does not protect the content, then it can play on other platforms.

Other players that can open a WTV file include VLC media player, Cyberlink PowerDirector, Cyberlink PowerDVD, and Cyberlink PowerProducer. For additional information, read this article on Microsoft’s web site.
