Raw audio is uncompressed pulse-code modulation (PCM) sound stored with no header at all — just a continuous stream of sample values. Because the file carries no description of itself, the sample rate, bit depth, channel count, and byte order have to be supplied by whoever opens it. That makes raw audio awkward to share but very useful in audio programming, embedded devices, and recovery work, where a plain stream of samples is exactly what is needed.

 

How to open a raw audio file?

The standard tool is Audacity. Use File → Import → Raw Data, then set the encoding, sample rate, and channels to match the file.

 

If you do not know the correct settings, start with 16-bit signed PCM, 44,100 Hz, stereo, and adjust until the audio sounds normal — wrong settings usually produce noise or a chipmunk-like pitch. Command-line users can play or convert raw audio with FFmpeg or SoX. Converting to a self-describing format such as WAV or MP3 saves you from repeating the guesswork. MPEG 4 Audio (M4A) compresses and encodes audio files by using one of two coder-decoder algorithms: Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) or Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC). M4A files are smaller in size while simultaneously better in quality than MP3 files, with which it shares the most similarities, in comparison to all other audio file formats.

 

How to open an M4A file?

M4A files open in most well-known, audio-playback programs, including iTunes, QuickTime, and Windows Media Player. For Apple users, iTunes is the default program to open M4A files. For Windows users, the default program is Windows Media Player. Users can also preview M4A files by highlighting the file and pressing the spacebar.

 

Additionally, M4A opens in VLC media player, Adobe Premiere Pro, Elmedia Player, Winamp, and a host of other programs.
