DivX started as a codec and associated player, but the release of DivX 6 includes an optional media container called DivX Media Format (DMF). DMF supports chapters, captions, multiple subtitles (XSUB), menus, multiple audio tracks, multiple video streams, metadata (XTAG), and hardware players.

How to open a DivX file?

By default, DivX opens in DivX player, which is a free download that works with many different kinds of devices and operating systems (OS). VLC media player and Elmedia are also good choices for opening DivX files.

It is important to know that “DivX” is not the same as “DIVX,” which is an obsolete video rental system. In fact, the name of the DivX codec was originally written with a winking emoticon, as “DivX ;-)” that was intended to be a humorous reference to DIVX, which failed in the market.
